"Impossible Is Nothing" - Adidas

One of my assignments for this week was to analyse a type of media content which illustrates the use of Persuasion in the changing of mindsets and how the content affects the effects of it.

After stalling as long as I could, I reluctantly dragged my fingers over to YouTube.com to see what I could possibly find. There were ideas I kept toggled in my mind although nothing was concrete yet.

Initially I actually chose an ad sponsored by Nike that was in fact, a campaign to squash racism. Stand Up Speak Up was in fact, a campaign started by Arsenal's Thierry Henry and backed by footballers around Europe, mostly, because that's where racism was still pretty much evident.

It isn't a new campaign, but had quite an impact when the advert was televised not only in English, but also in Italian, French & German. I found all 4 languages --unfortunately, I couldn't find one in Spanish-- and watched as Henry (pronounced as On-ray) acted as spokesperson for the whole campaign.

Other footballers included Rio Ferdiand, Ruud van Nistelrooy (atta, boy!!), Fabio Cannavaro, Ronaldhino Gaucho, Adriano, Claude Makelele and Phillippe Mexes amongst a few others. I'm sure if I could just get my hands on the Spanish version, Raul Gonzalez would also be included as one of the ambassadors.

As I got ready to pen down my thoughts, I came across the newest Adidas advertisement. You gotta hand it to them, Adidas has like, the best ads ever.

Nike used to be the leading brand for promoting sports ads but now it seems Adidas has upped the ante & their creative adverts have hit screens like a new wave of phenomena.

Anywayz, so I opened up new tabs with three videos I chose from their latest range of "Impossible Is Nothing" campaign, thinking that they would be again, promoting their up-to-date sportswear.

Instead I was blown away by Adidas's latest attempt at showcasing athletes and their success stories. And that's just not any old success story. It was a story based on the lowest point of their sporting careers. Of course being Adidas, there was David Beckham but there was also Lionel Messi from Barcelona and Jonah Lomu from the New Zealand All Blacks. A few others are also included in this series of adverts.

The ads are simple yet complex. It requires each athlete to illustrate their story by means of doodling and drawing. In short, in the the form of art.

I can't explain in too much depth how inspiring this ad is, or else I'll end up writing a 500-word essay. Instead, let me just show you:
