Today's Riffd jamming session was cancelled at 1am the night before due to a certain Kity who was down with the flu bug. Poor bugger. It was supposed to be the last jamming session held by the guys before Punani gets booted off to camp this coming Thursday but well, it wasn't to be.
And so, I entertained myself by watching a DVD of The Calcium Kid which I bought from a trip to JB where I also had my hair done. Not in a shockingly out-of-this-world way; just a little cut & a dye job, although the color doesn't really seem to stand out much. Mmpf...
Anywayz, so The Calcium Kid is a great movie if you're in a dire need for laughs. But, behind all that humor lies a very deep hidden meaning in the story as morals come in the form of figure of speeches. And in a way, it's also about standing up for yourself & not letting yourself be ruled by others, no matter how high the price.
And, you can't go wrong with Orlando Bloom. Ever. He carries the demurely humble, sweetly simple Jimmy Connelly role perfectly down to a T as South London's faithful milkman.
This is the same normal milkman who knocks out a professional boxer during a mildly harmless training session. Well, he didn't exactly knock Pete Wright out. It was more like, Pete knocked himself out. Or rather, his hand. As he tried to take a punch out of Jimmy's calcium-filled head.
Anywayz, since I don't have much to blog about these days perpetually because I don't have much of a life & has thus been spending much of my time under a rock, I thought I'd post something about this movie. For all it's gritty humor & excessive explicitories, it's a fun watch.
Another movie highly recommendable is Amanda Bynes' latest flick, She's The Man. Although it didn't get much publicity here, it is a big hit in the U.S & even the ratings are fantastic. Although it may seem like just another chick-flick, don't be quick to judge this movie by its poster despite the VERY beautiful people appearing as cast members.
And I fell in love with it for a number of reasons. Firstly, is because it's about soccer. Not the Bend It Like Beckham kinda film, but more of the normal I-want-to-play-soccer-but-I-can't-because-I'm-a-girl-and-our-team-has-been-cut. Amanda Bynes plays this rich-but-down-to-earth teen, Viola, who just wants to play soccer, period.
She takes advantage of her twin brother, Sebastian's absence from his school, Illyria, to attend tryouts for the guys' soccer team & at the same time, moving into Sebastian's dorm room, where she meets Duke Orsino -played by a luscious-lipped Channing Tatum- , Illyria's soccer team captain & Mr. Hunka-Hunka whom she slowly but surely, falls in love with.
Everyone in Illyria thinks she's her brother & she even has another girl falling for her, thinking that she's Sebastian. Things do get pretty messy but the point driven is still the same. This girl will stop at nothing just so she gets what she ever wanted. To kick a muddy ball across a field.
I especially loved the part where when Viola enters her dormroom as her brother & acts all macho, she accidentally pulls out a boot filled to the brim with tampons & Duke was the first to notice it. Soon, he & his two friends are crowding around her asking about the presence of those contraptions.
Viola's answer??
To stop really bad nosebleeds.
She even galled to challenge them back by incredulously announcing that even Beckham did it & proceeded to show them how to stick a tampon up their noses.
Sure, she was labelled a freak after that. But at least she got away scot-free.
Anywayz, now that my mini movie-marathon is complete, it's back to the TV screen with more World Cup action.
Laterz...
