Because I Am Black...

Believe it or not, this has nothing to do with race.

On my run to pick up the youngest two from school --Nuryn had Infocomm, Nini ended at six-- I decided to stop by Street 22 for some take away dinner. Since Mom wasn't cooking and was occupied somewhere else, she'd reminded me to buy some before I drove over to White Sands for the kids.

After ordering four packets of Seafood Fried Rice, I wandered off to one of the little hole in the wall shops that sold Bubble Tea. Sweetalk it wasn't but for the moment, it had to be. I opted for my usual Orange Yoghurt but struggled to remember which sister liked which. Kill me because as much as these two were the ones whom I would usually get the drinks with, I forgot who liked what. What I do remember was that one liked anything with Oreos and the other, anything fruity.

So I got an Oreo Chocolate (or was it a Chocolate Oreo??) for one sister and a Peach Ice Blended for the other. They could figure it out for themselves later.

Then came the million dollar question: with pearls or no pearls??

I squinted at the lady serving me an pursed my lips. Shit. Personally, I do not like pearls. I am disinclined to have my drinks inclusive of chewables, thank you. But for the other two, I wasn't so sure. I knew one of them liked pearls and the other didn't. But which one??

Yeah, I'm such a badass sister and I suck at remembering details (like birthdays).

So I thought, heck, let's just wing it. No pearls in the Oreo and pearls in the Peach.

When the sisters hopped into Optimus, Nini was the first to spot the drinks hanging onto the hook at the back of the driver's seat and asked if she could have the Oreo.

And being the big liar that I was, I replied, "Of course!! I knew you liked Oreo that's why I bought it. And Nuryn, you like Peach, right??"

Both their responses were delightful grins and gleeful thank yous.

Score!!

Or so I thought.

"I have no pearls??" Nini asked curiously.

"I do," Nuryn answered quietly and looked my way.

Damn. Caught.

And so I admitted albeit slightly sheepish that I forgot which one of them preferred pearls and which one did not.

"Just remember next time, Sis Lenny," said my youngest sister who just turned eight a few days ago. "I'm the one who likes pearls. Because I am black, like the pearls."

And so the first thought that flashed through my head was, my sister is the color of Bubble Tea pearls??

Alamak, this tembam (chubby) girl.

I hope she never grows up. She already thinks she's way too cool for smoochy cheek-biting kisses.

Laterz...
Lenny
