Munching On Macaroons

The family checked out the Halal Food Expo today and while it wasn't that crowded, I guess the fare today was better than what I would expect. Our first purchases were Otak-Otak stuffed Popiah, Keropok Leko (Chewy Fish Crackers) and this Malaysian version of Otak-Otak called Sata. Not Satay, but Sata.

Unlike its russet-brown counterpart, Sata is white and triangular in shape. We had those before in JB and they were like, the tastiest morsels ever. But these, huh. These were like the artificial versions of the real thing. You couldn't taste the texture of the supposed fish and it had INSTANT wrapped all over it.

What a waste to good food. And money.

After weaving through the alleyways we spotted an ice cream stand that didn't really sell ice cream but more like frozen yoghurt. Yes, people!! It's THAT frozen yoghurt stand that was always at NYP!! It was like I was being reunited with my lost love.

Of course, the sisters AND the mother were absolutely ecstatic whereas I actually managed to look half-bored.

"Ohh, this one," said I. "I had it at NYP like countless of times it was beginning to be a staple diet for us."

It was a dollar more than what we had at NYP and now I know why. Poly students will always have some sort of concession during our term on campus. Which is always kinda cool because students are the poorest kind of souls around. At EXPO, it was $3 for a small cup and $4 for a large one with only two choices of fruit. Whereas at NYP, it was $2 for a small one and $3 for a large with THREE choices of fruit or cookies.

Mom had the raspberry/blueberry variation and shared with the father while the three young ones shared a mango and chipsmore combination. Fartz and I went for a kiwi and peach flavored cup. All three cups were of the large size.

Then Adlonso got a bit greedy and when asked, she wanted another cup. So the kids went for a second round and this time it was a strawberry/banana option. It's not that we're greedy for greed's sake. It's just that the whole family happens to adore yoghurt, frozen or otherwise. And we do have cups and cups of Meiji ones back home.

After thoroughly combing through the hall, we decided it was time to get our dinner and head back. I went for Char Kway Teow because I've been wanting to eat anything remotely resembling Kway Teow. Fartz chose Beef Kebab and Potato Salad. Technically, the salad was mine but we all shared.

Adlonso bought Burger John, which looked REALLY good. Nuryn had some soupy noodle thing which didn't really look appetizing but she liked it anywayz and Nini bought a Black Pepper Hotdog roll.

And of course, during our rounds we spotted this stand that sold homemade Macaroons!! Oh my goodness you don't know how bad I've been trying to find simple enough Macaroon recipes so I could try it out myself. Plus, you don't get many Halal bakeries in Singapore much less one that sells this deliciously light French cookie.

Yeah, yeah it's a French delicacy okay. But so what?? It's colorful, it ain't cheap but it is oh, so sedaaaaap. It's made of eggwhites, ground nuts and confectioner's sugar, really. The ganache is probably about the same as how one would make a cupcake icing but needs more ingredients depending on what kind of filling you want.

I bought five different flavors; one for each of us. Milk Chocolate for Nuryn, Hazelnut for Nini, Adlonso took Vanilla, Lemon was Fartz's choice and I had Raspberry.

We reached home and of course I had to whip out the camera and snap like, 20 shots. Anywayz, if you live under a rock and don't know what the heck a Macaroon is, here are some pictures.

Enjoy, drool but make sure you don't short-circuit your terminal with all that liquid.

Laterz...
Lenny
