Just as we were about to start Mathew's class today, mild tremors shook the city campus for FIVE WHOLE MINUTES!! This was the effects of the earthquake from Indonesia that rocked 8.4 on the Richter scale. The same quake also triggered a tsunami to the nearby islands of Indonesia and for the moment has killed 10 people.
I have always heard of tremors being felt around parts of Singapore but this was my first time experiencing it. The shakes weren't that obvious at first until someone pointed it out and when all of us stilled, we could feel ourselves swaying slightly. It was quite freaky, really. Some classmates even tried to joke about it, telling each other to stop shaking or stop moving.
Rosz told me to stop breathing.
But then there came the period where the shakes got slightly worse and I gripped both Nick and Rosz for dear life. You could imagine the wild look in my eyes. Mathew, the dolt lecturer popped his head out and as he spotted students from other classes making a move to evacuate, he called out, "Ehh, why are you all leaving arh!?!"
And Rosz even had time to personally shake my chair to make me think that the shakes had worsened. Of course, I half-panicked and made a grab for whatever I could reach to sink my fingers into. Like, hello?? Virgin tremor-experiencer here. He even went to great lengths to inform me about his previous earthshake experience in his workplace.
Seriously though, it was kinda bad. Because it felt like as though it wouldn't stop shaking. And of course, in the end Mathew calmly told us to evacuate and as we cleared the halls it was evident that everyone had already left the building before all of us.
Nick had texted Casper to ask where he was and to notify him about the situation. His reply??
"Oh my God, you felt tremors?? Are they bad?? If they are I am so turning around and heading home!!"
Gee, thanks ehh friend.
Of course we trooped down dutifully except for Rosz because he stayed behind with our course manager and Mathew. He actually told me not to go down but of course, I wouldn't listen. I just went along with Nick. Downstairs, everyone had already gathered and awaiting further instructions.
We bumped into Isaac who was just on his way up and was busily asking what had happened. And with that, he whipped out his from his pocket a hardpack and dangled a cigarette from his mouth, efficiently lighting it.
Seriously, Isaac, a SMOKE!?! At a time like this?!?!
Anywayz, it was all good after that. Nothing totally major occurred, thankfully.
Rosz who had headaches and chest pains was miraculously cured after the break we had. Not immediately after the tremor fiasco though. And not that I paid much attention to him. I was busy scribbling notes to both Nick and Casper about our other classmates. The ones who were so aggressive during discussions and the ones who were so studious it made us feel dumb.
Gawd...I HATE feeling dumb. It's like as if 15 years of education had amounted to nothing. It sucks, really.
Laterz...
