It can't be called a giant squid anymore, though. They've named it the Colossal Squid, because of it's massive size. Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni is it's scientific name. Although it's a very large species, it's shorter but much heavier than the better known giant squid.
The squid was caught after it was hauled to the surface munching on one of its favourite foods - a Patagonian toothfish the fishermen had hooked on a longline. It was actually eating when it was being hauled up.
The previous giant squid found weighed 300kg and was found back in 2003.



According to scientists, if calamari were made from the squid, the rings would be the size of tyres. How funk-keh!!
If this were true, I'd loooooooove to have calamari for the rest of my life & would never complain of not having enough ever again!!
