Doing It For The Kids...

I had agreed to accompany Adlyn's class for an enrichment trip to the Singapore Science Center due to my own sleepyness. While snoring away at 8am a few mornings before, she called home & asked to talk to me. So, after Mom had passed me the phone, I was actually conversing with her in my sleep & didn't even know what I said.

Well, not until Adlyn came home & reiterated to me what I had just agreed to do.

Urrrgh...curse my bloody big mouth!! Even while sleeping, it has the ability to say the damndest things!!

And furthermore, the trip was held in the afternoon, just a little after school hours. In the hot, sweltering sun. The school bus came late; apparently their end said they didn't receive a fax whatsoever, hence the delay AND the miscommunication whether it was one or two buses.

In the end, the kids had to squeeze themselves, three to a seat while those without seats had to make do with the floor & the three adults present -which included me, lahh- just stood all the way from Pasir Ris to Jurong.

The trip turned out to be not such a big deal a trip because it was like as if the kids attended just another lab session. Well, it felt that way to me because heh, been there, done that. But to the kids, it was like reuniting with a longlost friend; their excited expressions could only be measured on the Richter scale.

And of course, I was an immediate hit with the kids. Without meaning to brag, yes. The second I came into view of the kids, they were already in awe because Adlyn & I looked so alike despite having different hair. Actually, it was mostly the girls that crowded around me; the boys couldn't be bothered & so was I. I mean, if anybody wanted to talk to me, by all means, talk!!

Their teacher, was a nice young Indian lady whom was married but still managed to look almost model-like. And of course, the kids worshipped the ground she walked on. With a teacher like that, who wouldn't?? I know I would!!

Anywayz, the enrichment lesson was either about DNA or bacteria; and our class had the one with bacteria. Which, I kinda found baffling because, were these kids in Primary 5 or Secondary 5?? I only learnt about all these biologically scientific specimens when I was halfway through secondary school. And that was only when I took up Pure Biology as a subject.

Apparently the school syllabus is changing & nowadays, kids are learning more than they have to. Since the kids have just finished their topic on Reproduction, hence the need to learn about DNA.

Although their versions of condoms varied from, "Eeeeeeeeeeeee!!!" to, "Condoms are so disgusting!!" to, "What's a condom??". And the best answer yet??

A condom is a THING that helps you not get AIDS.

Wow. Well said, coming from the mouth of an 11-year old girl, no less.

Kids these days. *shakes head in amusement*

Anywayz, even though the trip to the Science Center was shortlived, their joy shone through despite only doing a couple of bacteria experiments in the lab, Einstein lab coats & all!! Well, their greatest joy came from wearing those coats, that is. And the gloves.

And before you ask, no, I didn't wear any of them. But neither did their teacher, so there.

Despite that, I still played the Assistant Teacher, helping the girls' side of the lab for those whom needed assistance. Not a bad crowd, I must say. Not as rowdy as my sister Nuryn's class; boy, the kids there were like little devils personified!!

Although our journey home to Pasir Ris had us taking a whole bus to ourselves, we barely had time to rest ourselves before we arrived. Unsurprisingly, the journey home always takes a shorter time than the journey to the destination.

Though dead on our feet, Adlyn's day wasn't exactly over yet because she had a tuition session waiting for her at home. And while she was having tuition with Fatin, I knocked myself out in bed & was out like a light bulb until either one of my sisters woke me up for prayers.

Amazing what half a day at the Science Center could do. Oh well, it was in the name of doing it for the kids, man. For the kids...

Laterz...
